Two charges of 4/4 yellow-poplar lumber were kiln-dried to a desired final average moisture content (MC) of 8 percent in a small (approximately 2,000-board-foot capacity) dehumification kiln. The MCs of each board was determined by an electrical resistance moisture meter as it was removed from the lumber stack after drying. Variation of final MC within the charge was determined by stratifying lumber based upon its position within the kiln into three vertical and three horizontal groupings. Statistical methods were employed to determine differences. No significant differences were observed when comparing the average MC of the top, middle, and bottom layers on the charge, or when comparing the air inflow, middle, and air outflow sides of the stack.
