It has been observed that lumber from some geographic areas does not treat as readily as lumber from other areas. To evaluate possible differences due to geographic area or species, small sections of trees were treated in a laboratory. Both sapwood and heartwood sections of loblolly and shortleaf trees growing together at two sites in Mississippi were treated. Results showed that the geographic area in which trees were grown affected their treatability. Also, shortleaf pine from both areas was more difficult to treat than loblolly pine from the same areas. Further research is needed to verify the results of this research and investigate variation patterns throughout the species range.
