Variations in Effectiveness of Barks as Scavengers for Heavy Metal Ions

Tests were made on 19 bark samples, originating in many areas, to determine which of them would be suitable ion-exchange substrates for the removal of heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous waste solutions. Redwood bark has been shown to be an excellent scavenger for heavy metals, but for economic considerations, inexpensive waste bark supplies must be found near the waste to be treated. Of the barks tested, those considered to be potentially the most effective are: red alder, black cherry, Southern Wisconsin red maple, sugar maple, lodgepole pine, redwood, silver fir, and Sitka spruce.
