Veneer Recovery At a High-Speed Core Lathe

Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) logs up to 18-inch scaling diameter were processed on a high speed, small block core lathe cutting 4-foot veneer under production conditions. From logs averaging 12.3 inches in scaling diameter, veneer recovered was 59.2 percent of block cubic volume of which 84-percent was grade C or Better and 16-percent grade D. For a sample of logs averaging 16.4-inch scaling diameter peeled on a conventional lathe, recovery was 38.5-percent. Veneer grade from these logs was 54-percent C and Better and 46-percent D. By regression analysis, the percent of block volume recovered as veneer equaled 94.25 – 1.76 (scaling diameter) – 1,798 (scaling diameter squared).
