This paper discusses a statistical study on the veneer yields of 169 southern pine bolts. The bolts were 103 inches long and graded as No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3. Density of grain was measured, and the bolts were peeled to 1/10-inch veneer. The veneer data were subjected to graphic analysis to determine percentage of B, C, and D grade veneer for each log class. Despite their limitations, the grade yields–unadjusted for upgrading potentialities–can be used to appraise the relative worth of bolts. It seems evident that grade-3 open-grain bolts are of limited value. More than 90 percent of their yield was Grade D, and the volume of D veneer produced at a plant must be minimized relative to the amount of C and B and the demand for C and D core stock. Grade 1 bolts yielded a superior veneer pattern, but they are scarce and the industry must rely heavily on, grade 2 bolts for C and better veneer. Within grade 2, the small diameters peeled out more C and better than did the large ones. Again this pattern derives from a grading system that permits the number and size of knots to increase with log diameter.
