Describes an electronic tool developed to assist an estimator of wood failure on plywood shear specimens and compares the accuracy and reproducibility of this video method with those of the normal visual method. Relationships between American Plywood Association (APA) wood failure values and those of visual and video methods of evaluation were found for 75 Douglas-fir plywood shear specimens covering the range of wood failure from zero to 100 percent. These relationships were used to convert visual and video evaluations on a second similar group of specimens into predicted APA evaluations which were compared with actual APA values. The visual and video methods were found to have about, equal accuracy but the reproducibility of the video method was found superior to that of the visual method.
