The market for wood siding has shown a drastic drop over the last decade. This loss is due to a number of factors, one of which is over-absorption of moisture eventually leading to paint troubles and decay. Some of this trouble is inherited from house design. Nevertheless, wood has shouldered much of the blame. This report casts light on how short dip treatments can greatly improve moisture resistance. It is shown that a 3-minute immersion in a water-repellent, 5 percent pentachlorophenol preservative is superior to in-place treatment with the same solution applied by spray. The effectiveness of using gutters and increasing the width of overhang of roofs is also noted.
