The Department of Defense is now coordinating all lumber products by using a single procuring agency. The St. Louis District was appointed as the Engineering Lumber Control Office responsible for controlling the purchasing activities of the three regional lumber purchasing offices. For many uses water-repellent preservative treated lumber is required and detailed specifications are required for this product. As a guideline for specifications a Lumber and Allied Products Handbook (DSMA H-7) is used. The current specification is not entirely satisfactory and the following areas of improvement are suggested: 1) develop a simple method for determining retention and penetration, 2) develop a method for testing water-repellency, 3) develop a quicker and more efficient method of determining paintability, and 4) develop a method for inspecting treated stock.
