The decay resistance of 40 native and exotic woods were evaluated by exposing test specimens to Poria incrassata and Merculius lacrymans and then determining the weight loss due to decay. Both sapwood and heartwood were evaluated through out a 2-year period. In every comparison between Poria and Merculius, the percentage weight loss was greatest for the specimens exposed to Merculius. For the native species, the overall weight loss for heartwood was 13.3 percent and for sapwood 24.4 percent. The smallest overall weight loss of 2.2 percent was for osage-orange. For eastern redcedar, red wood, western redcedar, it was 10.3, 15.7, and 16.7 percent, respectively. Douglas-fir and western hemlock performed poorly with 26.7 and 31.7 percent loss. The weight loss for 17 tropical species ranged from 0.3 to 24.6 percent. African mahogany and Ohia showed the most weight loss of these tropical specimens.
