Weight, Volume, and Moisture Content of Sawdust from Selected Southern Species

Sawdust from hardwoods of 10 major species, plus bald- cypress, was collected from the resaws of six band sawmills by a system that produced uniform packing between samples. Eight 1-cubic-yard samples, with a total weight of about 2 tons, were taken for each of the following species: ash, cottonwood, cypress, elm, sugarberry, red oak, white oak, pecan, sweetgum, black willow, and yellow-poplar. The sawdust was from logs freshly felled. From each 1-cubic-yard sample, eight sub- samples were collected and ovendried for determinations of moisture content. The results are tabulated in this paper and indicate that the ovendry weight of sawdust appears to be about one-third the ovendry weight of solid wood. The weights obtained in this study can be used for changing sawdust measurements from weight to volume, and thus aid in the utilization of sawdust by the pulp and paper industry and other wood fiber manufacturers.
