Unlike much high-speed woodworking equipment, semiautomatic planers have been developed to allow operation by semi-skilled workers. Continually greater acceptance of carbide knives will greatly reduce maintenance costs which are often 50 percent of the original planer cost. Further meaningful developments in woodworking machinery must, however, be preceded by accumulation of new knowledge regarding the effects of wood and machine variables on cutting techniques.
