Withdrawal Loads for Screws in Soft Maple and Particleboard

The forces required to pull three types of wood screws from specimens of soft maple and particleboard were analyzed in a test of holding power. The three types of wood screws tested were common with 13 threads per inch, improved with 16 threads per inch, and self-tapping with 12 threads per inch. The average withdrawal force for soft maple was 35 percent greater than it was for the particleboard, even though the particleboard had a 50 percent higher specific gravity than the wood. The improved and self-tapping types of screws had significantly greater withdrawal resistance in soft maple than the common wood screw. There was no significant difference in withdrawal loads for screws pulled from particleboard.
