Tests were carried out to evaluate the relationship between the withdrawal strength of dowels from the side grain of wood and the shear strengths parallel to the grain. Specimens constructed with sugar maple dowels and some 15 typical furniture woods were included in the tests. The shear strengths of these woods varied from a low of 990 psi to a high of 2,330 psi. Test results agreed closely with predicted values with one exception–observed values for sweetgum averaged 15 percent higher than predicted. In all other cases, the averages of the observed values differed by no more than 7 percent from predicted values.
