A review of the literature for the calendar year 1969 in the field of wood engineering is covered. A total of 366 references, foreign as well as American, are listed and brief reviews of major articles are included. The literature is subdivided into several categories. Current research on the problems associated with low-cost housing and housing systems and how wood may be utilized to reduce house costs is brought out. Literature on basic wood strength studies and the effects of various loading and service conditions is also covered. Studies pertaining to tensile, compressive, shear, and bending strength as well as results of density studies are reviewed. Recent innovations in testing methods, including new ASTM standards, are discussed. Stress grading in general, and machine- stress-rating and non-destructive testing in particular, were topics which were important in 1969. Theoretical and highly technical studies are reviewed in a section on structural mechanics and design. Stress and strain in orthotropic and anisotropic bodies and plates and the effect of end restraints on wood columns and “layered systems” came under this heading, as did investigations on rheological properties of wood. Strength properties and design methods for plywood and plywood components, particularly stressed-skin panels, appeared in the literature. Several manuals appeared on pole and piling design. Experiments on wood sign posts and posts for use in highway median guard rail systems are noted. Investigations were conducted on factors affecting pole strength and load-carrying capacity. Theoretical as well as practical studies of finger joint strength are reviewed. Articles on nails and, other types of fasteners, are also reviewed briefly. Residual stresses and curvature-stress factors for glued-laminated beams were reported. Progress in research on fire-resistance and fire-retardant treated wood is also reviewed. Articles dealing with acoustical, thermal, and electrical properties of wood and wood-based products are included in the review. Of particular interest in this area are references to practical sound control methods and thermal conductivity studies. Other categories covered in the engineering review are tropical woods and the use of wood for specific, nonresidential structures, such as bridges, electric transmission towers, and farm buildings.
