Coarse grained plywood does not perform well as an underlayment for decorative plastic laminates of 1/16-inch thickness. Commercially available hardboards do not have sufficient resistance to delamination. Phenolic bonded sawdust boards cannot withstand more than 900 psi curing pressures. Particleboards that can withstand 1,100 psi are needed. Internal bond strengths from 250 to 300 psi, screw holding power that will hold a No. 8 screw loaded to 400 pounds, dimensional stability of 0.1 percent with humidity changes from 15 to 95 percent, machinability with carboloy tipped tools, resistance to denting at 100 kg. load with the Rockwell Hardness Tester are desirable properties. Cost considerations are important.
