With the advent of beryllium windows it now becomes possible to use a low voltage soft X-ray to examine effectively materials of low density, such as particleboard and fiberboard, for quality control. Samples from a press load are cut, X- rayed, and the film developed immediately. The wet X-ray film is available for evaluation about 15 minutes following board manufacture. As soon as these cross sections have been evaluated, adjustments in the process can be made and another sample obtained. This method of operation reduces the amount of off-grade board to below that normally produced when mechanical tests are used as control devices. Quality control procedures are based on density variation within a given board; hence, the determination of absolute density is not required. X-ray is equally useful in examining density profiles in particleboard.
