A study was conducted to determine the effects of planing of lumber before versus after drying on the yield of sound, unexposed dimension cuttings from short oak lumber dried by radio-frequency/ vacuum (RFV) and dehumidification drying methods. The difference in yields due to time of planing was minimal. In dehumidification drying, planing prior to drying improved the yield by 3 percent compared to planing after drying. Yields from lumber dried by the RFV process were not affected by the time of planing. A reduction in the amount of warpage present was found in the REV process compared to the dehumidification process, as well as in the lumber planed after drying versus the lumber planed before drying.
