Speaker, Carl Houtman, PhD. Research Chemical Engineer, Forest Products Laboratory

After studying in Minnesota (BChE & MS), Delaware (PhD), and France (Post-doc), Carl arrived in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1991, he joined a project focused on understanding wood biogenesis at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL). He pioneered early molecular modelling efforts directed at wood structure. With a change in position in 1998, he expanded into many other areas of research, paper recycling, non-chlorine bleaching, fungal decay, nanocellulose production, etc. Over the years, Carl’s focus on understanding wood structure on the molecular scale, his skill with simulation, and his ability to build instrumentation has served him well.

"Understanding the biological process that result in wood formation, has be a goal for nearly 75 years. Recently molecular biology, electron microscopy, x-ray scattering, and molecular modelling have allowed a clearer view of how trees make wood. A process that begins with cell division and ends with lignified cell walls results in material organized on several length scales.
After a brief discussion of the evolution of land plants, this talk will review the current understanding of the molecular level processes result in the formation of wood.  This information should be useful to anyone who wants to make products from wood."

"In addition to the increase in online presentations (like this one), another significant change with respect to technical presentations is related to the length of talks. Many presentations at conferences are now a mere 10 to 15 minutes; there are even so-called ‘elevator pitches’ of just 3 to 5 minutes. To be successful, it is more imperative now than ever that presenters be laser-focused, clear, succinct and use good visual aids.  Scott Leavengood, Professor in the Department of Wood Science & Engineering at Oregon State University, will give a brief demonstration of a presentation that he has given that highlights some of the more effective elements of good presentations followed by a summary of tips he has picked up over the years and how he is adjusting to giving ever shorter and shorter presentations. There will be plenty of time for participants to share their insights and ask questions."

Special Issue Invitation: Recent Advances and New Approaches for Additive Manufacturing Using Wood and Biomaterials

Message from the Guest Editors

Dear Colleagues,

The world is experiencing an unprecedented paradigm shift in fabrication using advanced and additive manufacturing. At the forefront of this shift is the utilization of polymeric and metallic materials. By contrast, wood and other bio-mass-based materials have received comparatively less study toward their utilization in this automated and flexible manufacturing mode. To increase the use of bio-based materials for advanced manufacturing, we are supporting a three-year series of special issues in this topic area. Year one will focus on approach and technology, year two will focus on bio-derived resins for direct or composites use, and year three will focus on design and structural elements. We invite papers on using primarily bio-based materials (excluding PLA) that describe research on emerging techniques, methods, technologies, control approaches for advanced manufacturing, or characterization or modeling of such.

Industry Event: ICWSE November 2-4, 2023 https://forestprod.org/news/624393/ https://forestprod.org/news/624393/

You are invited to join the upcoming international conference ICWSE 2023, which is intended to bring together professionals from universities and industry, to present and discuss the most recent advances in wood science and engineering, to stimulate technical and scientific innovations on sustainable development of designing and manufacturing wood products, and to provide a focus for the exchange of latest ideas on wood products engineering.

The event will be hosted by the “Transilvania” University of Brasov (Romania), Faculty of Furniture Design and Wood Engineering, and it will be held between 2 - 4 November 2023, at the Aula of the “Transilvania” University of Brasov.

The participation to the conference with a scientific presentation is conditioned by the acceptance of a short summary of your research, provided within the Pre-Registration Form .

If the author chooses to publish the full paper prepared for the conference, three scientific journals, which act as ICWSE 2023 partners with special issues dedicated to this event, are available: Applied Sciences, Bulletin of the “Transilvania” University of Brasov, and PRO LIGNO. Details can be found under the heading “Paper Publishing”. The publishing acceptance will be based on the result of a peer-review process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The final permission for the on-line publication of the scientific papers will occur AFTER the conference and it will be conditioned by two requirements: (1) the paper received a positive review, and (2) the paper was presented at the conference.

Publishing the full paper in one of these special issues is not compulsory. Participants may give a presentation at the conference without submitting a full paper, if they prefer. In such cases, only the abstract is required, as mentioned above, which will be included in the Book of Abstracts of the conference.

A participant may be the first author of maximum two papers.

All persons who wish to attend the conference (with or without presentation) must fill in the Pre-Registration Form.

Visit the website here!

The Conference is scientifically supported by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, the Forest Products Society and the Society of Wood Science and Technology
