In 1947, the International Wood Collectors Society (lWCS) was founded by people who were interested in wood and wished to share their knowledge with others. The IWCS is a non-profit membership association whose purpose is to disseminate information on collecting and working with wood.

This publication, A Guide for Developing a Wood Collection, will explain how to get started in wood collecting and how to develop and maintain your collection. Many people collect just for the fun of it, as there is little opportunity for financial gain from collecting, but personal achievement and satisfaction can be high. Some people collect for the friendship they find with others who share the same interest. Regional and annual meetings of the IWCS bring together many members and are great opportunities for learning and acquiring new woods and skills. Meetings are held annually at various locations in the United States, Australia, England, and Canada. A schedule of meetings can be found on the IWCS website ( and in World of Wood, the IWCS bi-monthly journal. Correspondence with members is encouraged, both nearby and overseas.
